“Beyond Flint: Why Your Drinking Water May Be Worse”
While the disaster in Flint, MI captured national attention last year, the problem of lead contamination of drinking water is NOT unique to Flint. Hundreds of municipal water systems are built with lead pipes that risk becoming the Flints of tomorrow.
Learn about drinking water testing, particularly for lead, and why you may not be safe even if your water company meets federal guidelines and standards. Learn what you need to know about testing, what to look for including emerging contaminants, the limits of the testing and how testing should be done. We’ll also discuss the EPA’s revised procedures for sampling lead in drinking water and how these procedures influence the results.
RSVP today. Space is limited.
Guest Speaker:
Dr. Yanna Lambrinidou
Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Science and Technology in Society at Virginia Tech, and the founder of Parents for Nontoxic Alternatives, a non-profit children’s environmental health organization in Washington, DC. Her research into the 2001-2004 Washington, DC lead-in-water crisis and its aftermath, helped expose wrongdoing on the part of engineers and scientists in local and federal government agencies. Dr. Lambrinidou’s work focuses on environmental health, science/engineering ethics, and social justice. In 2014-2015, Dr. Lambrinidou served on the EPA National Drinking Water Advisory Council (NDWAC) Lead and Copper Rule (LCR) workgroup, and was the group’s sole dissenting member. In 2016, Dr. Lambrinidou testified at the U.S. House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee hearing on “The Flint Water Crisis: Lessons for Protecting America’s Children.” She serves on the Policy and Infrastructure subcommittees of Michigan Governor Rick Snyder’s Flint Water Interagency Coordinating Committee (FWICC), which aims to develop long-term solutions to Flint’s drinking water crisis.
